Florence Johnson (b. 1924) served in the U.S. Navy WAVES during World War II, working in cryptology to decode German military communications using the top-secret Bombe computing machine. Stationed in Washington, D.C., she and other women in naval intelligence worked around the clock, sworn to secrecy about their critical role in deciphering Enigma code messages. Her work directly contributed to Allied success. After the war, she continued public service with the FBI and a U.S. Congressman.
